Instagram + Facebook

When Mike and I started Instagram nearly two years ago, we set out to change and improve the way the world communicates and shares. We’ve had an amazing time watching Instagram grow into a vibrant community of people from all around the globe. Today, we couldn’t be happier to announce that Instagram has agreed to be acquired by Facebook.  

have to say, not happy that FB has acquired this company. instagram is a great app, and I can understand why FB wanted it, but as an independent developer and avid user of instagram i don’t think this bodes well for the community of photographers that have built instagram into the powerhouse that it is today. it is another place that FB will glean information to package users and sell that information to others.

Backbone.js gives structure to web applications by providing models with key-value binding and custom events, collections with a rich API of enumerable functions, views with declarative event handling, and connects it all to your existing API over a RESTful JSON interface.

Backbone.js is an architectural framework that helps you write well-structured Web applications. It is not, however, a user interface framework and it therefore doesn’t help you with the way your application looks.

Backbone’s confined scope is a good thing: it’s lightweight, non-intrusive, not coupled to things you don’t need, and it lets you use the UI toolkit of your choice or simply roll your own styles and widgets.

In this article I’m going to walk through one approach to protecting your resources from unauthorised use outside your application. During the build phase, your high-value resources will be encrypted before being embedded in the app bundle. These resources can then be decrypted on-the-fly when required in your app. I had a number of goals in mind when developing the solution presented in this article:

Yesterday Apple launched iPhoto, its photo management app, for the iPad and iPhone… and we’re rather pleased to find they’re the latest to switch to OpenStreetMap.

The desktop version of iPhoto, and indeed all of Apple’s iOS apps until now, use Google Maps. The new iPhoto for iOS, however, uses Apple’s own map tiles – made from OpenStreetMap data (outside the US).

If you don’t have iPhoto, you can view the maps using this unofficial viewer  from Dair Grant or a transparent comparison from Ivan Sanchez.

The OSM data that Apple is using is rather old (start of April 2010) so don’t expect to see your latest and greatest updates on there. It’s also missing the necessary credit to OpenStreetMap’s contributors; we look forward to working with Apple to get that on there.

But we’re delighted to see another prominent map user make the switch to OpenStreetMap, and look forward to many more.

this is some fairly important news. there have been rumblings that apple would move away from google and their mapping solution at some point. it would appear that point is fast approaching. as a developer who uses mapkit extensively, i am anxious to see how the transition will be made.

Large-scale education was not developed to motivate kids or to create scholars. It was invented to churn out adults who worked well within the system. Scale was more important than quality, just as it was for most industrialists.

But at the end of the day what has happened is that US law (in fact, Maryland state law) as been imposed on a .com domain operating outside the USA, which is the subtext we were very worried about when we commented on SOPA. Even though SOPA is currently in limbo, the reality that US law can now be asserted over all domains registered under .com, .net, org, .biz and maybe .info (Afilias is headquartered in Ireland by operates out of the US).

it is unconscionable, that state law is impacting a canadian company operating on a global scale. what is the justification for enforcing Maryland state law on a Canadian company operating a global corporation?
